Karen David currently oversees the Circuits and Integrated Approaches portfolio of the BRAIN initiative. She joined the Systems and Cognitive Neuroscience cluster in 2013. Karen has also worked on various special projects including coordinating the review activities of the Biospecimen Repository Acquisition Committee (BRAC) for the Parkinson's Disease Biomarkers Program. Before joining extramural research, Karen did her postdoctoral fellowship in Molecular Biology and Genetics at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She earned a B.S. from the University of the Philippines and a Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Medicine from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Dr. Jim Gnadt, NINDS Program Director in Systems and Computational Neuroscience and Team Lead for the NIH BRAIN Integrative and Quantitative Approaches, has worked in systems and cognitive neuroscience and neuroengineering for over 35 years. He has held his current position at ... NINDS, the neurology institute of NIH, since 2008, and has been a principal in the NIH BRAIN Initiative since its inception in 2014 where he co-leads the team of trans-NIH Program Directors in the 'understanding circuits' part of the initiative. Dr. Gnadt manages a diverse NIH funding portfolio in systems and computational neuroscience, including experimental programs in integrated, team-science approaches and in intracranial opportunities for investigative human neuroscience. In collaboration with NIH review offices, Dr. Gnadt has developed tools to understand the precision of NIH review scoring and methods to convey its margins of uncertainty. Prior to taking the position at NINDS, Dr. Gnadt was an NIH-funded investigator since 1984, working on sleep physiology related to narcolepsy, quantitative neurophysiologic approaches in cognitive neuroscience, systems engineering to understand neural circuit dynamics, and neurological etiologies of eye behavior pathologies. Facilitating translation of curiosity-driven, fundamental biology into human impacts remains the focus of Dr. Gnadt's efforts at the NIH.

Prior to coming to the NIH, Yasmin worked in journalism-first at National Public Radio and then at the Cincinnati Enquirer. She has her bachelor's and master's degrees from Georgetown University.

Dr. Paul J. Mathews received his bachelors degree from the University of Oregon where he studied invertebrate behavioral plasticity in the lab of Dr. Nathan Tublitz. Dr. Mathews work focused on understanding how the biophysical properties of specific voltage-gated ion channels in an auditory brainstem nuclei contribute to their capacity to make sub-millisecond computations necessary for low frequency sound localization. For the past several years Dr. Mathews has been working at UCLA under the mentorship of Dr. Tom Otis where he is currently working to uncover the cerebellar circuit mechanisms that underlie motor learning and memory. To do this Dr. Mathews is utilizing a multifaceted approach that includes both in vitro and in vivo electrophysiology, optogenetics, advanced optics, histology, and behavioral manipulations to make links between cerebellar circuit activity and motor output in rodent models. Mauricio Rangel-Gomez is an engineer and neuroscientist with expertise across domains and organisms in systems neuroscience, using a diversity of techniques and approaches, including electrophysiology, brain imaging, and neuropsychopharmacology. Mauricio earned bachelor's degrees ... in psychology (Universidad El Bosque) and engineering (Universidad de los Andes) in Colombia, and a master's degree in neuropsychology (Maastricht University) and doctorate in cognitive neuroscience (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) in the Netherlands. Before coming to NIH, Mauricio conducted basic and applied research in humans and non-human primates aiming to understand the mechanisms of memory, attention, and reward responses at UC Berkeley and U Maryland. Mauricio joined the government through a fellowship to work at FDA, where he managed the FDA-NIH cooperation for the funding of projects aimed to support regulatory science. Currently, Mauricio is a program officer at NIMH where he manages the Neural Substrates of Learning and Memory program; Mauricio is also actively engaged in DEIA activities within NIMH and NIH-wide.

Dorit Saberi, Ph.D is a Supervising Psychologist and Clinical Director of the Safe Harbor- Trauma Recovery Center at Harbor UCLA Medical Center. She is also an Associate Professor inthe Department of Psychiatry at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) - David Geffen ... School of Medicine and a part-time faculty member at California State University, Long Beach- Psychology Department. She conducts research, provides direct services, supervision and teaching in Evidence Based Practices adapted for adults diagnosed with severe and persistentmental illness who are high utilizers of correctional, psychiatric emergency and inpatient services, and are homeless or at risk for homelessness and for survivors of interpersonal violencesuch as gang related violence, human-trafficking, and immigration/refugee trauma. Dr. Saberi iscertified as a Prolonged Exposure for PTSD therapist, supervisor and trainer through Edna Foa's Center for the Treatment and Study of Anxiety (CTSA).She is also a certified Cognitive Behavior therapist and a diplomate of Aaron Beck Academy of Cognitive Therapy, and a Certified Teacher of Community Resiliency Model (CRM®). She is an author of several grants, educational curricula, and best practices parameters related to the development and implementation of trauma-informed/trauma-specific services. Her training and research interests include treatments for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Post-Traumatic Growth, PositivePsychology and Well-Being, Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Borderline Personality Disorder, and Cognitive Behavior Therapy adapted for special populations (Justice Involved, Targets of Interpersonal Violence and Chronically Mentally Ill). Dr. Saberi is an investigator at the Lundquist Institute, Harbor UCLA Medical Center. Dr. Saberi's extensive experience in trauma informed/resilience informed care, as well as positive psychology and well-being, informs this presentation.

Dr. Ashley Feinsinger is bioethics faculty in the Department of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Her research pursues questions at the intersection of ethics, philosophy of language, and neuroscience, with a focus on invasive basic brain research in ... humans. She received her PhD in Philosophy from UCLA, completed the Medical Education Fellowship from DGSOM at UCLA, and Advanced Training in Health Care Ethics Certification from the University of Washington. She has published on a range of topics, including medicalization and the ethics of non-therapeutic research with implanted devices. Funded by the NIH BRAIN Initiative, she leads a neuroethics lab focused on understanding patient-participant motivations for enrolling in invasive brain research. Through comparing patient values with those of researchers and the public, she aims to incorporate the patient perspective in research design. Her approach to neuroethics is interdisciplinary, collaborating with neurosurgeons, behavioral psychologists, and patient-participants to address conceptual questions about exploitation and trust, as well as practical questions about patient engagement and consent.

I am an affective and systems neuroscientist leading the Translational Neuromodulation Lab in the Department of Neurosurgery at Baylor College of Medicine. My lab seeks to leverage targeted neural stimulation, electrophysiology, neuroimaging, and cognitive neuroscience tasks to ... understand the neural bases of affective and social cognitive dysfunction. This program of research has led to the identification of a novel stimulation-based strategy for evoking positive affect and anxiolysis, for which our team has a United States Patent awarded. I was honored when this project was selected as the featured cover article at the Journal of Clinical Investigation, with coverage by the NIH Director's Blog4. This nascent program of research has garnered academic and public media attention, and I am fortunate to serve as PI on a variety of NIH-funded projects in the intracranial research domain (KL2TR000455, K01MH116364, R21NS104953, R01MH127006).
